Title:

Design and synthesis of chemical probes to study the role of microglia in neuroinflammation-related diseases.

Abstract:

The main goal of the present research proposal is to design and synthesize new chemical probes to shed light on the role of microglia in neuroinflammatory diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent experimental evidences suggest that microglia activation might be implicated in these pathologies, but whether microglial driven responses may be detrimental or beneficial is still an unanswered question that awaits more dedicated experimental attention. Small organic molecules can be used as pharmacological tools to elucidate the role of individual pathways in the intricate network responsible for the injured phenotype, on route towards an in-depth understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of these pathological conditions.

PRO ACQUA 2012

Title:

Pro Acqua: study on presence of xenobiotics (drugs, estrogen ...) in the urban water cycle and research/definition of applicable solutions for the protection of persons, environment and animals.

Abstract:

The project proposed by Eco-Research S.r.l. will develop within three years. In an early stage will be analyzed the amount of drugs and metabolites into the sewer system. These compounds as well as affect aquatic ecosystem may impair human health, falling within the scope of the power cycle through irrigation, for their interfering effects on endocrine system able to make alterations in reproductive activity and the appearance of diseases. This analysis will be carried out in aqueous effluents, taking samples before and after the sewage treatment, either with the methods already in use, either with new methods of scientific inquiry, because the goal is to determine whether the determination of concentrations of these pollutants are harmful to man and the environment.The data collected and scientific considerations related to developing a response (and methodology), and a control system (pilot) which enables better protection of human health and the environment. In the second and third phase of the project, once processed data will be studied and developed different techniques of neutralization of these contaminants in order to find solutions to the current sewage treatment plants and define interventions that act directly on various sensitive points, by mitigating and containing the problem at the source (i.e. before spreading pollutants into the environment). The efficiency of the abatement system will verify projected xenobiotics using a pilot plant, which will be delivered and then easily applied at several purifiers.
